MICHELLE WAS one of the tiniest women Killian had ever met. She stood four feet, ten inches in her stocking feet, and she often threatened to tease her natural hair into a halo to add another six inches to her height. Michelle’s boyfriend, who was five feet, seven inches of good-humored ginger, asked her politely not to because he was pretty sure he’d have hair tickling his nose every time they hugged, and she obliged, usually settling for a scrunchie to keep it out of her way.

She worked as a special education teacher in one of the nearby middle schools and had sworn devoutly that she was never having children of her own. Since Kevin adored her—and also taught English at a neighboring high school—he was fine with that.

Both of them were delighted to get rid of the playpen.

“But what do you want it for?” Michelle asked, watching as Kevin got it out of the top of their closet. He was on a step stool—she never would have reached it.

Killian found himself looking over his shoulder, afraid that their super would appear like a magician in a puff of smoke. “Kittens,” he whispered. “Somebody dumped an entire box of kittens on our doorstep, and we’re going to get them shots and find them homes, but in the meantime….”

“It would be nice not to step on the little carpet fleas,” Michelle said with a solid nod. “Understood. Wait.” Her amazing brown eyes sharpened in her fine-boned face. “Our? Who is the we in our? Kevin, did you know Killian is dating again? Did Killian start dating again and not tell us?”

Killian scrubbed at his beard stubble, sort of wishing he’d gotten his shower and shave before he’d gone across the hallway to knock on their door.

“He, uhm….”

“No, babe.” Kevin stepped down from the stool, gripping the folded-up playpen by the handles. “In fact, the only new person in the complex that I know of is….” His eyebrows lifted. “Todd’s little brother? Dude, are you hooking up with Todd’s little brother?”

Killian tried to take the fancy pop-up porta crib/playpen thing from Kevin, but he held it back.

“No, dude,” Kevin said seriously. “You’re gonna need some help with this.”

“Absolutely,” Michelle said. “We need to set this up.”

“You said that with a straight face,” Killian accused, surprised by their blatant nosiness. “Don’t you guys have… you know. Work to go to? Kids? That sort of thing?”

“It’s a district-wide in-service day,” Kevin said, wrinkling his nose. “In December. Our admin is so dumb, they deserve for us all to show up late, with our best coffee and doughnuts.”

Michelle’s expression got dreamy. “Doughnuts,” she said on a sigh. “Can we stop for some on the way, Kev?”

“Yeah, babe.” Kevin kissed the top of her head, which was set in tiny braids. “But first―”

“Let’s go meet Todd’s little brother.” Michelle gave Killian a brilliant smile. “The man who apparently warmed the cockles of Killian’s cockles.”

“That,” Killian sputtered, “is a little bit personal!”

“Well yeah, Killian,” Michelle retorted. “But that’s because you don’t give us a whole lot of personal to work with.
